Immersion Class

 

Our 10-month Japanese Immersion Class engages students in a wide variety of subjects that spark their imagination, broaden their view of the world, foster critical thinking, and promote advocating for causes that matter. Starting in September 2023, the Japanese Immersion Classes takes place at Aozora after school once a week with a choice of a weekday or Saturday morning class. (The class for G6-G8 is only offered on a weekday). K-G8 students who can understand classroom expressions in Japanese are eligible for this class. Classes are divided by grade levels and meet on different days, so please refer to the above class schedule for each grade level.

あおぞらの日本語イマージョンクラス（１０ヶ月プログラム）では、子ども達の想像力をかきたて、世界観を広げ、クリティカルな思考を育むことを目標にしており、様々な経験をしながら学びを深めていく日本語の体験学習になります。

2023年9月より、日本語イマージョンクラスは、平日の放課後と土曜日の午前中（G6-G8は平日のみ）にあおぞらで行われます。クラスでよく使われる日本語表現が理解できるK-G8の生徒が対象です。クラスは学年ごとに分かれており、開講日も異なりますので、学年ごとのクラススケジュールをご参照ください。

This program requires a full school year commitment from September 2023. We offer two payment options, a full payment or pay by term. 本プログラムへのご入学はは1年契約を基本としていますが、一括でのお支払い・タームごとのお支払いをご選択いただけます。

Enrollment process for Immersion Class

The Immersion Class requires a full school year commitment starting September 2023. The tuition can be paid either in-full or by installments:

Students will be enrolled on a first come first served basis. Once we receive your application, we will contact you individually to arrange an assessment interview. We accept applications until all of the seats are filled. 8-12 children per class.

Eligible to apply 

Students have to satisfy all three attributes below:

  • Kindergarten through 8th Grade students in 2023-2024 school year

  • Children who understand simple classroom communication in Japanese

  • Children motivated to learn the Japanese language and culture

日本語イマージョンプログラム登録プロセス

日本語イマージョンクラスは、スクールイヤー通年の（2024年6月まで）の登録が必須となります。受講料のお支払いは一括払いと三回の分割払いをお選びいただけます。

お申し込みをいただいた順番に登録手続きを進めます。申し込みをいただいた後、個別でアセスメント面接を行います。定員に達した時点で、申込み受付を終了とさせていただきます。1クラス8～12名程度を目安にしています。

対象 

対象条件は以下の3つとなります。：

  • 2023-2024年度、キンダガーテンから8年生までに属する

  • 日本語でのシンプルな会話が理解できる

  • 日本語や日本文化を学びたいという意欲がある

 
 

Content and Language Integrated Learning 

Instruction in the immersion class is conducted in Japanese. Through Japanese, students are able to engage with a wide variety of subjects. While the Japanese language is not the subject of study, it is the medium of study, exploration, and discovery. In this way, Japanese is learned naturally and in a manner that engages the students. 

Many of our students are not exposed to Japanese on a daily basis, so the students' conversion in the classroom may default back to English on occasion or they might mix English and Japanese together. However, it is our strong belief that students’ learning should not be narrowly focused on the use of only a single language. It is very natural for multilingual people to mix multiple languages in a sentence and/or use their stronger language as needed. However, that does not mean that they are not learning. Students should be able to express their thoughts and opinions freely rather than being restricted to only using the Japanese language in the classroom. Teachers will however, continuously support the students’ output (speech and writing) in Japanese. We celebrate bilingualism and multiculturalism and see the student’s engagement in learning as the measure of success.

日本語イマージョンクラスは完全に日本語で行われます。子ども達は日本語で様々なトピックの内容を学び、課題に取り組みます。「日本語のクラス」ではなく、日本語を使って学び、探求し、発見していくクラスです。.子ども達が探求し学びを深める中で、日本語を自然に習得していきます。

小学生になると日本語を日常会話として使わなくなる生徒もたくさんおります。なので、教室の中での生徒の会話が、時々英語になってしまったり、日本語と英語が混ざった文章になったりすることもあります。しかし、私たちは子ども達の学びのプロセスは自由でフレキシブルなものであるべきで、一つの言語だけに完全に縛られ制限されるべきではないと考えています。多言語多文化環境にいる子ども達にとって、使いやすい言語を使って表現することや複数言語を複合することはとても自然なことです。発話が英語であっても、日本語と英語が混ざった文章になったとしても、そこに学びがないというわけではありません。日本語だけに制限された教室の中では、本当に深い学びや、自由な発想、率直な発言などが制限され、また「間違い」を恐れる感覚を生み出します。先生はもちろん、生徒の日本語での発言や発表などを常に教え促していきますが、日本語のみに強制された環境ではありません。私たちはバイリンガリズムと多文化共生を大切にして、子ども達がクラスをどれだけ楽しんでくれているかということを一番の目的としています。

Inclusion and Differentiated Instruction

As an inclusive community of curious, open-minded and caring global citizens the children grow up cherishing their identity and celebrating diversity. Our students come from diverse backgrounds speaking Japanese as their primary language or second language. Immersed in a diverse culture, the students learn and grow together and make friends with children who are like them in some regards and different in others—helping them to appreciate people’s individual identities, including their own.

We also know that every student has a different interest, family background and individual learning style. In the same classroom, it is normal to see children with different depths of learning and understanding. Thus, differentiated instruction becomes a critical aspect in a classroom that embraces and celebrates diversity and inclusion. Therefor, teachers deliver lessons at varying levels of difficulty based on the ability of each student, and support the individual needs of the students. Teachers foster a safe and supportive environment that builds a community of learners.

インクルーシブなコミュニティの環境では、ダイバーシティを尊ぶ事を当たり前として育ちます。あおぞらコミュニティには、日本語を第一言語で話す子どもも、第二言語や外国語として話す子どももいろいろな子どもが集まっています。お互いから学びあえることを大切にし、多様な人たちが集まるコミュニティの中でお互いの違いやアイデンティティを尊重できる人間が育まれます。

生徒はそれぞれ違うことに興味を持ち、家族の形も違い、学び方も違います。そんな違う個性が集まる中で、同じ教室の中であっても、学びの深さや理解度が違うことも当たり前です。多様な人間が集まるダイバーシティを大切にする教室では、先生が生徒一人一人にあった教え方をすることがとても重要になってきます。先生は、教室の中で、子ども達がお互いの強みから学び合う、自由で温かなサポートのある環境づくりを大切にしています。
