Japanese Beyond Pre-K 「幼稚園の後の日本語教育について」
On November 6, 2021, as part of the School Choice Workshop, I presented about “Japanese Beyond Pre-K.”
It requires a lot of time and energy to support your child’s Japanese language education. Especially after graduating from Aozora’s preschool program, your child’s Japanese learning environment will change drastically. Let’s think about how you can support your child after this transition!
I would like to share the following 4 questions with your family to think about.
Question 0: Why do you want your child to learn Japanese?
ーAs your child gets older, he/she may ask you why he/she has to study Japanese. It is important for you to know why so that you can share your vision/wishes to your child.
Question 1: Why does your child want to learn Japanese?
ーAt this young age, your child may not be able to clearly define or articulate their thoughts yet. However, you can provide your child with a lot of enjoyable and meaningful exposure to help them create their own vision.
Question 2: How can your child continue to learn Japanese?
ーFundamental formula to Mastery：Motivation + Time + Practice X CONSISTENCY
It takes time to master any skill!
Question 3: What approaches and resources can help your child to continue learning Japanese?
ーApproaches: home, Japanese class (Saturday School, Online), talking on the phone, going to Japan, etc.
ーResources: Aozora Community’s ESP (Elementary School Program) supports your child’s continuing Japanese learning. There are so many other educational institutions, organizations, and materials (books, websites, tablet apps). Please utilize them to meet your child’s needs.

１１月６日に、School Choiceワークショップで、あおぞら卒業後の日本語教育をどのように行うことができるのかについて話をさせていただきました。
言語の発達には時間と労力がかかります。あおぞら卒業後は、日本語環境が減ってしまい、英語の方が強くなっていく学習環境に入る子どもたちがとても多くなってくると思います。そんな中、どのように子どもたちの日本語の学習をサポートしていくことができるでしょうか。
ワークショップでは、以下4つの質問をご家族で考えてみるよう提案させていただきました。
質問０：どうして日本語を勉強して欲しいですか？
ー大きくなってくると、子どもたちは、どうして自分は日本語を勉強しなくてはいけないのか？といったような質問をぶつけてくることがあります。そんな時、親としてどういった考え・願いがあるのか、伝えることが大事になってきます。
質問１：どうして こどもは日本語を勉強したいですか？
ーまだ、お子さんが小さい時は、自分から「日本語が勉強したいから、教えて！」といったようなことは、あまりないと思いますが、将来的に、子どもたち自身が自分の「日本語を勉強したい！」と思う何かがあることがとても重要です。たくさん日本・日本語の面白くて楽しい体験をさせてあげましょう。
質問２：どうやって子どもが 日本語教育をつづけていけるの？
ー言語習得するための基本的な法則は、「モチベーション＋時間＋練習」となります。これに、さらに「継続」してじっくり、長い時間をかけて日本語教育を応援してあげてください。
質問３：日本語教育をするための取り組み方やリソースについて
ーアプローチ：家、日本語クラス（土曜日学校、オンライン）、電話で話す、日本に行く等
ーリソース：あおぞらコミュニティーでは、ESP（Elementary School Program）で、子どもたちの日本語教育を応援しています。そのほか、様々な教育機関・団体・教材（本、ウェブサイト、アプリ）などがありますので、みなさんのニーズにあったのを選んで活用してみてください。
