Our Programs

Aozora Community Foundation offers educational programs, cultural events and community support for children and adults of all ages year-round, celebrating the rich culture of Japan. 





Hiyoko-gumi is a weekly drop-in class for 0-2 year olds with their caretakers. Meet folks in the community as your child plays and makes friends. Kids and parents will have a directed session of Japanese language songs, games, and stories followed by snack and free play. Please join us!

Who can attend: Class is for 0-2 year old children. Caretakers/guardians must be present. 

When: Every Saturday (with exceptions - See Calendar)

Time: 10am – 11:30am (90min)

Snack: Bring your own snack of fruit or crackers and water bottle (Nut Free)

Cost: Class attendance can be purchased as 10 qty per $80, 5 qty per $60, or $15 for a single class

9月16日(土曜日)、ひよこ組は内容をより充実させて再開します。この秋より、ひよこ組は、0歳から2 歳までの子ども達を対象にした保護者参加型のクラスとなります。歌や手遊びやゲームや読み聞かせなどの日本語でのアクティビティーの後に、おやつ、自由遊びの時間があります。ぜひご参加ください。

after school Program 2017 September-December


Wednesdays I Love Kanji classes are now FULL.

Our After School Program is open to any children from 3 years old to 5 years old. Even children who are not enrolled in our Preschool Program can attend our After School Program. Through the immersive class experiences, your child learns Japanese naturally.

12 Sessions for the Fall season

Instruction will be in Japanese only

School pick-up may be possible based on attendance. Please let us know if you are interested in pick-up when you register for classes. Pick-up fee will apply.

karugamo-gumi: Saturday Class for preschool age children
かるがも組 (プリスクール年齢対象の土曜日クラス)


We've just started accepting applications for Karugamo-gumi for 2017-2018 school year. The exciting and stimulating curriculum that includes arts, music, science and Japanese seasonal topics is a great way for your child to experience learning in an early childhood educational environment. The class is built upon the same foundation as Aozora Gakuen’s pre-school program.

Who: For the children born in year 2013 and 2014

When: Every other Saturday / 20 sessions in total for the school year. Please see our calendar

Time: 9am – 1pm

Class size: up to 12 children

Teacher: Student ratio = 1:6

Registration Fee: $50 (For new student only)

Tuition: $1,600 (Includes material fee)

Aozora Community Foundation invites you to our second annual gala! Enjoy an evening of food, drinks and entertainment with a possible visit from our favorite taiko kangaroo. Come celebrate with us Thursday, June 1st at ShapeShifter Lab in Gowanus. Bring a guest, grab a drink, sample some Japanese tapas, hear some brilliant musical guests and bid on some incredible auction items. You ticket purchase will enable us to expand our programming and after-school events so that we can continue to nurture precious young minds. Come join this community in celebration and fun!

Mochitsuki New Years Festival / あおぞら餅つき大会

Location: Aozora Gakuen's Backyard (316 Carlton Ave, 1F, Brooklyn)
AM Session: 10am-12pm (15 families)
PM Session: 1pm-3pm (15 families)
$15 per family (1 adult + 1 child), $5 per additional adult, no fee for additional child

The first event hosted by Aozora Community Foundation this year is Aozora Mochi-Tsuki Party. We will use the traditional method of making mochi with “Kine and Usu”. It’s a fun and yummy event, so please join us! 



Preparing Our Kids for a Diverse World


Date: Saturday, December  10, 4:00- 7:00 PM

Reservations: $15 per individual/ $25 per couple

  • Complimentary on-site babysitting available.
  • Japanese to English translator will facilitate.

How might we both celebrate diversity and build a strong community? How can we foster positive conversations with our children around race? Aozora Community Foundation will be hosting a workshop designed to support and expand your skills both as a parent and as an adult.  Join the conversation in a safe environment of friends and associates, to strengthen our community and help each other discover some strategies and answers.

On-site babysitting with pizza dinner for kids will be available. Wine and non-alcoholic drinks served during the workshop.

Workshop will be directed by Melba J. Nicholson Sullivan, Ph.D, graduate of Howard University who earned her PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Nicholson Sullivan taught in the Marital and Family Therapy and Counseling Psychology programs, and has created youth development programs in North Carolina and Illinois, She regularly facilitates parent and professional trainings in developing emotion management and cross-cultural relational skills.

今回のワークショップはMelba J. Nicholson Sullivan, Ph.D のご指導の元で行われます。Howard University大学院卒業後、University of Illinois at Urbana-ChampaignでPhDを取得。ノースカロライナ州とイリノイ州において、結婚と家族におけるセラピー及びカウンセリングの心理学プログラムの教壇にたつ。また、若者向けの教育プログラムなども開設。感情マネージメントや異文化交流のスキルについての家族向けやプロフェッショナルトレーニングを定期的に行なっている。



Navigating NYC Public School System


This workshop is for the parents who have child(ren) up to 4 years old. In many NYC public schools, school tours have already started. This session will provide you with information about the NYC school system which changes every year, and also about how to gather information about particular schools. Come and learn more about how to find schools that suit for your child's development. More details below:

Aozora Community Fall Festival


Bring your kids and grandparents and join us for a fun-filled afternoon! Children will enjoy crafting their own taiko drum, participating in a FREE family taiko workshop and doing some heavy lifting in the mikoshi parade! Don't forget your yukata or jinbei for the bon-odori. And there will drawings to win prizes throughout the event. As a special treat, the amazing musician, Kaoru Watanabe will be hosting a 45 minute taiko workshop just for adults -- What an amazing opportunity to learn from a true master of the craft.
